Physics, from the control room out

I work on beam dynamics and trajectory correction during accelerator commissioning. Here’s the general physics behind it, and the publications that came out of it.

Beam dynamics and trajectory correction

During commissioning, a beam rarely goes where the design says it should on the first pass. My work is understanding why — modeling how the beam actually behaves — and then correcting its trajectory back toward the design orbit using the tools available on that particular machine. I work across two different correction approaches, choosing between them depending on what the commissioning shift actually needs.
